Request a current payoff quote
Ask the lender for the payoff amount, expiration date, payment instructions, and expected title-release timing. Daily interest can make the payoff different from the account balance.
Compare payoff and purchase offer
If the offer is higher than the payoff, the remaining equity may be paid to you after the lender is satisfied. If the offer is lower, you may need to cover the difference to complete the sale.
Let the buyer explain the transaction flow
Dealers regularly handle lender payoffs, but procedures vary. Confirm who sends funds, when you receive any equity, when the title is released, and when the vehicle changes possession.
Keep records
Retain the payoff quote, purchase agreement, payment confirmation, odometer information, and any Washington reporting records. Do not rely on an informal promise about lien release.
